Women’s Lacrosse Downed in Conference Opener Against Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team dropped their first Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup of the season to the Grove City Wolverines, 9-5.

W&J falls to 2-4 on the season with an 0-1 mark in conference play. Grove City elevates to a 3-5 on the year with an unscathed 2-0 mark in PAC play.

Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) each led the Presidents in scoring with two goals each. Bolinda also snagged five draw controls and three ground balls with two caused turnovers. Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman) added the fifth goal on the day while Avery Byard (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) picked up the sole assist.

Haley Lawyer (Glenside, Pa./Archbishop Wood) led the team in caused turnovers and ground balls with five each.

W&J hopped on the scoreboard first with an unassisted effort from Bogats to briefly take a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines ripped off two goals in response before Bogats netted her second score of the game to even the score at 2-2. Grove City netted two goals to regain the lead as the opening quarter of play came to a close, 4-2.

Both sides traded scores in the second quarter, seeing Grove City take a 5-3 lead into the half. W&J's sole score in the second came off the stick of Bolinda on a successful man-up opportunity.

W&J scored the first tally of the second half as Byard found Holland for the rapid score out of the break. Similar to the first half, Grove City scored two quick goals after the Presidents' first score of the half. Bolinda knocked in her second goal of the game to chip the Wolverine lead to two, 7-5.

Grove City maintained their offensive momentum in the fourth quarter, adding two insurance goals to take the 9-5 win.

Gianna Baker (Carlisle, Pa./Trinity) made her second appearance in goal, saving a game-high eight shots and picking up her second loss of the season.
