Baseball Earns Fifth Conference Sweep of the Season over Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (20-5, 11-1) swept the Saint Vincent Bearcats (13-16, 7-7) Sunday afternoon. W&J has now swept five of the six Presidents' Athletic Conference opponents faced thus far.
 
Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) went 3-for-7 on the day, driving in four total baserunners on the day with a triple. Brian Feldman (Gibsonia, Pa./Eden Christian Academy) went 3-for-6 on the day, driving in three runs on the day in game one. Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) inched closer to the 200-career hit milestone with a hit in game two.
 
Game 1 – W&J 11, Saint Vincent 6
W&J jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first four runs of game one in the top of the first. Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio/Wellington School) singled to score Drew Garth (Glenshaw, Pa./North Hills) for the first run of the game. Stern chipped a single through the right side to score a run. Feldman bookended the scoring with a two-run double to right center, 4-0.
 
After Saint Vincent scored their first run in the bottom of the second, W&J responded with a three-run third inning. Feldman drove in his third run of the contest on a single. Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) doubled to left center to score Feldman and Stern, 7-1.
 
The Bearcats entered a four-inning scoring stint, adding four runs to reduce the lead to 7-5. Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) broke the game open in the top of the eighth inning, hitting a grand slam to elevate the W&J lead to 11-5.
 
Saint Vincent added one run in the bottom of the ninth but to no avail as the Presidents coasted to an 11-6 victory.
 
Ethan Marszalek (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) pitched 6.0 inning, fanning five in his fourth victory of the season. Ben Pierce (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) worked 2.0 inning of relief with two punchouts. Brand Bastion closed the win in the ninth with two strikeouts.
 
Game 2 – W&J 4, Saint Vincent 3
A pitcher's dual in game two led to 6.0 innings of one-hit baseball to kick off game two. Knox Meier (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) pushed his hit streak to 18 straight games with at least one hit to break the Bearcats' no hitter in the fourth.
 
W&J broke the scoreless contest in the top of the seventh with a two-run triple by Stern, 2-0.
 
The Presidents added additional runs in the eighth and ninth. In the eighth, W&J scored by way of a wild pitch which drove in LaDuca from third. In the ninth, Stern batted in Paddy Hernjak (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) on a sacrifice flyout, 4-0.
 
The Bearcats broke up the shutout in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run homer. The Presidents manage to escape the late comeback by Saint Vincent to take the 4-3 victory.
 
Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) pitched 6.1 one-hit innings into the seventh and 8.2 innings on the day with 10 strikeouts. DiMatteo picked up his sixth win, now 6-0 on the season. Cruz worked the final out of the nightcap with a strikeout.
