WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College softball team (11-14, 6-8) split in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with Saint Vincent (16-14, 4-8) on Sunday. The Presidents dropped game one, 9-4, before rebounding in the low-scoring game two, 2-1.
Kyra Blauth (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the Presidents offensively with four hits on the day going 3-for-4 in game one to pace the Presidents, adding a hit in game two. Ashley Theimer (Woodstock, Md./Marriotts Ridge) recorded the only multi-hit effort in the day nightcap with two hits.
Game One – W&J 4, Saint Vincent 9
A double down the left field line by Mirranda Rinehart (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scored Anna Luxenberger (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) for the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Rinehart was later scored on a single back up the middle by freshman Sydney VanNess (Warren, Ohio/Howland) to put W&J ahead, 2-0.
Saint Vincent scored one run in the top of the fourth and overcame the Presidents lead with three in the fifth, 4-2.
The Presidents responded in the bottom of the frame scoring on an error and an RBI double to right field by Savannah Bodnar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) to knot the score at four.
The Bearcats produced five more runs over the remaining two innings to wrap up game one.
Macayle Thornhill (Warren, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) suffered the loss on the mound after 2.0 innings of work. Thornhill entered in for relief Kaylee Witner (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) who pitched the first 5.0 innings.
Game 2 – W&J 2, Saint Vincent 1
Saint Vincent started the scoring in game two putting a run up in the top of the first before being held scoreless the rest of the tilt.
The Presidents found their two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings.
A single to right center from A. Luxenberger pushed VanNess from second to home for the first W&J run of the game, 1-1.
Hannah Allen (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) smacked a double to center field to score Blauth for the final run of the game, 2-1.
Taylor Dunn (Washington, Pa./Trinity) picked up her sixth victory in the circle after pitching all 7.0 innings for the Presidents.
Up Next: The Presidents are set to host Thiel in a conference doubleheader on their Senior Recognition this coming Saturday (April 19). First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
