ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (21-7) dropped a nonconference game to the Mount Union Purple Raiders (20-7), 10-8.
Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius) led the Presidents on the day, going 3-for-4. LaDuca etched himself into the W&J Baseball history books, becoming the sixth player in program history to reach the 200 hits milestone.
Drew Garth (Glenshaw, Pa./North Hills),
Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio/Wellington School),
Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and
Knox Meier (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) all had a hit on the day. Meier continued his streak of one hit in each game to 21-consecutive outings.
The Purple Raiders struck first in the bottom of the first, adding the first runs of the game, 2-0. W&J responded quickly in the top of the second with a four-run inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Three-straight walks to open the second presented W&J with prime scoring opportunities.
Carl Wagner (Honey Brook, Pa./Westtown School) drove in a run on a fielder's choice followed by a
Teddy Platt (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) sacrifice flyout that scored another, 2-0. A single by LaDuca and walk by Meier drove in the remaining runs as the Presidents worked their way to the first lead.
Mount Union battled back in the bottom of the second, regaining the lead with a three-run inning, 5-4.
W&J added three runs in the top of the fourth to reclaim the lead, 7-5. A LaDuca single, Meier sacrifice flyout and a double off the field fence drove in the three runs for the Presidents.
The Purple Raiders answered again in the bottom of the frame, tacking on four runs to take a 9-7 lead. Cruz launched a solo homer over the left field fence to cut the deficit within one run in the top of the fifth, but to no avail as Mount Union took the 10-8 win.
Brady Dojonovic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) picked up the loss in 1.1 innings of relief.
Thomas McLaren (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) got the start and pitched 2.0 innings, fanning two.
