KENT, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (23-8) dropped a competition against Division I Kent State (25-13), 21-3.
Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius),
Drew Garth (Glenshaw, Pa./North Hills) and
Brian Feldman (Gibsonia, Pa./Eden Christian Academy) all logged hits on the day against the Flashes.
Kent State added 17 runs in the first two innings of the game before the Presidents got on the board. Garth launched a two-run homer over the left field fence to tack on the first runs of the game for W&J in the top of the third, 17-2.
The Golden Flashes answered with a three-run bottom of the frame, growing the Kent State lead to 20-2.
Feldman hit a single in the top of the fourth inning, giving the Presidents their third and final hit. A
Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) walk and
Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) hit by pitch loaded the bases for W&J.
Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) hit a sacrifice flyout to right field to score the final baserunner of the game for the Presidents, 20-3.
Kent State added one run in the bottom of the fourth and road their 21-3 lead to the 7-inning run-rule victory.
Nate Hess (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and
Jake Stiehl (Reston, Va./South Lakes) each pitched scoreless innings.
Nate Nolan (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) pitched 1.2 innings of relief with two strikeouts, surrendering one earned run.
Brandon Bastian (Barto, Pa./The Hill School) pitched one inning, with one strikeout and allowing one earned run.
W&J gets back to Division III baseball this Wednesday on the road against Franciscan in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
