BETHANY, W. Va – The Washington & Jefferson College softball team (13-18, 8-12) was bested by the Bethany Bison (25-11-1, 11-8) in their final Presidents Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season, dropping game one 9-2 and the tail end of the twin bill 8-4.
Bethany's sweep of the Presidents ends the season for the softball team with an overall record of 13-18 and 8-12 in conference play.
Mirranda Rinehart (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the charge for the Presidents offense with five hits on the day. Rinehart went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one and 2-for-4 in game two with a double.
Game One – Bethany 9, W&J 2
Bethany set the pace early scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning on five hits. The Bison found the scoreboard once more in the bottom of the fifth adding two more runs in the frame, 7-0.
The Presidents scored their first and only two runs of the outing in the top of the sixth, 7-2. Rinehart drove in the first run on a single to left field. A hit to right field from Ashley Theimer (Woodstock, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and an error by Bethany advanced Rinehart home in the next at bat.
Bethany added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to win by a 9-2 score in game one.
Kaylee Witner (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) was credited the loss in the circle after 0.1 innings of work. Macayle Thornhill (Warren, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) pitched 5.2 innings in relief.
Game Two – Bethany 8, W&J 4
Down 2-0 after the first inning, the Presidents responded with three runs in the top of the second. Savannah Bodnar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) secured the 3-2 lead with a three-run homer over the left field fence.
Both teams put up a run in the third inning. Kyra Blauth (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) pushed through the Presidents run on a single through the left side, 4-3.
The Presidents maintained their lead until the Bison pieced together another five-run inning, this time in the bottom of the fifth of game two to claim an 8-4 victory over W&J.
Taylor Dunn (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took the loss in game two after 4.2 innings pitched and one strikeout. Witner pitched 1.1 innings in relief and waved one batter as well.
