HARRISON CITY, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team (2-0) continued their hot start to the season with a 4-3 win over Division II Seton Hill (0-1).
Freshman Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) and sophomore Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) took their doubles momentum into this match, starting the Presidents off with a 6-2 win. The Griffins flipped the momentum in the other two doubles matches to take the overall team point, 1-0.
The Presidents took four of the six singles matches to shift the contest in their favor. Three of the four victories were done in straight sets. Freshman Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) took the No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) won the No. 4 singles by a score of 6-1, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, freshman Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) won 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) clinched the contest with a tight win at No. 5 singles. Cole won singles match 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
The Presidents look to continue their unbeaten start to the season back home at Janet Swanson Tennis Center on Friday (Sept. 12) in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener against the Saint Vincent Bearcats. Doubles matches will begin at 4:00 p.m. and singles matches will follow after.
