WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis (3-0) opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a 6-1 victory over the Saint Vincent Bearcats (2-2).
The Presidents took the doubles point with a sweep in all three matches to take a 1-0 lead. To start things off, sophomore
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) and freshman
Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) won 6-3 at the No. 3 position. At No. 2, freshmen
Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and
Bella Graham (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) won 6-4 to gain the doubles point. To complete the sweep, senior captain
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman
Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) won 6-3 at the No. 1 position.
The Presidents took the momentum from partnered play into singles competition as Moorhead won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Graham won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to put W&J up 3-0. Paugh finishes with her second clinch of the year at the No. 6 position, winning her match 6-3, 6-0. Additional match wins came from Hamade and sophomore
Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.
The Presidents look to continue their unbeaten start to the season with one additional home nonconference matchup against the Mount Union Purple Raiders on Monday (Sept. 15). Doubles will begin at 4:00 p.m. with singles to follow afterwards.
