Box Score STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season against the Franciscan Barons (4-1) in their second Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup, 5-2.
The doubles matches were tight between the Barons and the Presidents. Each team had a win and it took an extended set to win the third match. The Barons ended up taking the doubles point. Freshmen Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and Bella Graham (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to avoid the sweep.
The Barons controlled the top of the singles lineup in this contest. The Presidents picked up their two team points with wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions. Hamade won 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and Freshman Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) won 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). Hamade and Paugh each hold a 5-0 record at their respective spots in the lineup through singles competition.
The Presidents look to regroup on Monday (Sept. 22) as the team returns to the Janet Swanson Tennis Center to host the Thiel Tomcats. Doubles matches will begin at 4:00 p.m. and singles matches will follow afterwards.
