BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson women's tennis team (6-1) continued their winning ways in Presidents' Athletic Conference play as they defeated the Geneva Golden Tornadoes (4-4) by a score of 5-2.
The Presidents got off to a hot start sweeping the doubles matches to earn the first team point, 1-0. Sophomore
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) and freshman
Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) set the tone with a 6-0 win at the No. 3 doubles position. Junior captain
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman
Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) won 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen duo
Bella Graham (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and
Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) also won 7-5 at No. 2 doubles to finalize the sweep.
The President found their points from the back of the lineup in singles play. Moorhead won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Hamade continued her unbeaten start to the season, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Sophomore
Paisley Cole (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) clinched the win for the President with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 5 position. Finally, Paugh also continued her unbeaten start to the season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 position.
The Presidents look to keep this momentum going when they return to the Janet Swanson Tennis Center on Tuesday (Sept. 30) to battle the Division II West Liberty Hilltoppers. Doubles matches will begin at 4:00 p.m. with singles matches to follow.
