WASHINGTON, Pa. – Despite an exceptional defensive effort, the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team fell by a 1-0 score to visiting Concordia University Wisconsin in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.
The loss drops the Presidents to 1-2 on the season. Concordia Wisconsin improves to 2-0 in 2025.
Despite the loss, W&J put together a steady defensive effort, turning away opportunities by Concordia Wisconsin throughout the contest. Concordia outpaced W&J by a 22-6 margin in shots and a 14-5 margin in penalty corners.
Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Presidents in the loss. The sophomore goalkeeper reached double digits with 18 saves. Erhard made nine saves in the third quarter alone as Concordia Wisconsin turned up the pressure offensively.
In the final minutes of the game, Concordia took advantage of a corner opportunity. The Falcons registered the lone goal of the game with just 2:41 to play. Katie Quirke provided the finish after consecutive passes from Katelyn Cardinale and Bente Scheeres.
Fighting to score an equalizer and force overtime, W&J registered a shot and earned a corner chance in the final minute. The Presidents were unable to find the back of the cage as the Falcons held on for the one-goal victory.
Joscelynn Anglin (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) led W&J with a pair of shots on goal. Aside from Erhard's efforts,
Bailey Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and
