ALTOONA, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team (0-1) picked up two victories at the Penn State Altoona Tri featuring Penn (1-6) and Penn State Altoona (1-5).
W&J 3, Penn 0 (25-10, 25-12, 27-25)
Sophie Little (Marysville, Ohio/Fairbanks) led the team offensively in the Presidents opening match with five kills.
Lola Jacobs (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and
Faith Fetsko (Venetia, Pa./South Park) also contributed four kills each.
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) led the setting room with assists.
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) led the team in digs with 11.
The Presidents grew an early 7-3 lead in the first set. Service aces by
Mia Matchett (Lancaster, Ohio/Bloom-Carroll) catapulted the Presidents to the swift lead. A kill from freshman
Anna Boikov (Wilmore, Ky./West Jessamine) sparked an eight-point run as the Presidents jumped out to a 22-9 lead. A service ace by
Jordan Sirianni (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and kill by
Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) shut the door on the first set.
The Presidents jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the second set as Moorhouse, Sirianni and
Sydney Allen (Washington, Pa./Trinity) all added service aces. Similar to the first set, a W&J freshman in
Stella Stossel (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) sparked an eight-point run in the midst of the set to grow a 19-4 lead. The Wildcats briefly traded points before surrendering the set, 25-12.
The Wildcats gained some momentum in the third set, creating multiple lead changes in the early going. Penn managed to create a 19-15 lead before the Presidents fought back to knot the score at 24. Kills by Little and Jacobs paired with a Sirianni service ace granted the Presidents the third set victory, 27-25.
W&J 3, Penn State Altoona 1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20)
Fetsko put her offensive abilities on full display in the Presidents second match of the day, totaling 19 kills with a .318 hitting percentage. Moorhouse collected a total 46 assists, marking a new career high for the junior. McFarland led in digs with 25 while Oldham contributed six total blocks.
The Presidents began working from behind in the opening set as the Lions grew a 19-14 lead. W&J remained within striking distance but ultimately succumbed to a 25-21 set one score.
The Red and Black flipped the script in the second set, creating an 11-9 lead generated by four kills from Fetsko. Penn State Altoona miscues helped the Presidents close out the second set accompanied by three kills from Fetsko, 25-19.
Down 12-7 in the third set, the Presidents rattled of their third eight-point run of the day to jump to a three-point lead. A solo block from Little pushed the Presidents to a 21-18 lead. Oldham and Fetsko won the third set with back-to-back kills, 25-22.
Trading short offensive bursts from each team, the Presidents managed to pull away with a 16-12 lead. Kills by Stossel and Oldham sealed the closely contested 25-20 victory in the fourth set.
The Presidents will resume play at the Muskingum Tournament on Friday (Sept. 12) for a two-day event. W&J will begin their tournament slate with a match against No. 15 ranked Marietta which has a scheduled first serve of 4:00 p.m.
