WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team (10-4, 5-0) marched past the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (6-8, 2-3) by a final score of 73-44.
Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led the Presidents in scoring on the night with 18 points, shooting 5-for-9 (55%) from the field.
Riley DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished with night with 16 points while
Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa./Indiana Area) and
Michelle Jellison (Monongahela, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) also finished in double figures 10 points each.
Jacey Mullen (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) led the team in rebounding with 10 on the night.
The Presidents opened the conference clash with a 21-2 advantage in the first quarter. W&J did not allow a Yellow Jacket field goal, holding Waynesburg to just two made free throws from two separate trips to the charity stripe. Loutsion led the way in the opening quarter with eight points followed by Kovalchick and
Marina Grado (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) with four each.
W&J piled on a 24-point lead before the Yellow Jackets made their first field goal of the game at the 7:18. The Presidents responded with back-to-back three-point plays from DeRubbo and
Shannon Conley (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin). Mullen closed the scoring for the Presidents in the second quarter on a pair of paint points as W&J took a 40-14 lead into the half.
The Presidents came out of the half with an eight-point run, featuring four points from both DeRubbo and Kovalchick. As the Yellow Jackets compiled their best quarter of the game, Jellison closed out the third quarter of action with a successful three-point play and a made tipin, 61-33.
W&J coasted in the fourth quarter to the 73-44 final score, edging the Yellow Jackets in the final period 12-11.
W&J women's hoops won the rebounding battle 52-38 and held a large advantage in the turnover margin 22-14. The Presidents also held advantages in points off of turnovers (20-8), second chance points (10-3), points in the paint (36-18) and fast break points (23-9).
Women's basketball returns to action on the road again, traveling to Hiram for a conference meeting on Saturday (Jan. 14). Tipoff is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
