Second Half Runs Propel Presidents over Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson Presidents men's basketball team (14-5, 7-3) earned a 72-61 Presidents' Athletic Conference win on the road against the Grove City Wolverines (7-12, 4-6).

Junior captain Nathan Plotner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) led the charge for the Presidents with a 20-point performance. Plotner also recorded nine rebounds and three assists. Additionally, sophomore Cameron Rowell (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and senior captain Alex Acosta (Acworth, Ga./North Cobb) played key minutes in today's win. Rowell finished the contest with 15 points and six rebounds. Acosta had 14 points of his own.

The Wolverines got out to an early lead to begin the contest, starting the game on a 16-5 run. W&J found their stride and were able to close the gap. Rowell started the game with six of the team's first nine points. Rowell went on to have 13 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Presidents were able to close the gap to three points right before the Wolverines got a last-second three-pointer to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room.

At the half, W&J shot 34.78% from the field and 83.33% from the free throw line. W&J also outscored Grove City 11-5 on fast break points.

The two teams traded buckets to begin the second half. Following the under 12-minute media timeout, three-pointers by sophomore Quinton Burlenski (Bridgeport, Ohio/Central Catholic) and senior captain Matt Seidl (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) sparked a 10-2 run, which gave the Presidents their first lead of the game. W&J followed that up with an additional 9-0 run sparked by Plotner to give the Presidents a 59-53 lead. Those two consecutive runs proved to be the difference as the Wolverines could not close the deficit as W&J went on to win the game 72-61.

W&J shot 51.61% from the floor in the second half. The Presidents outscored the Wolverines 16-5 on points off turnovers in the closing twenty minutes.

W&J returns to Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Wednesday (Feb. 4) when they host the Franciscan Barons. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
