Men’s Soccer Edged by Waynesburg, 2-1

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team (3-4-0. 2-2-0) fell in a tight 2-1 scoreline to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (4-4-2, 2-2-1).

Twelve Presidents recorded shots throughout the contest. Junior Chris Davis (Toms Brook, Va./Strasburg) led the Presidents with one shot and scoring the goal. Freshman Gavin Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) also had one shot on goal and an assist. Additionally, classmate Isahias Torres (Homestead, Fla./Florida Christian) had two total shots, one of which was on goal.

The Yellow Jackets got off to a strong start as they netted the game's opening goal within the first 10 minutes of the contest. W&J responded following the goal by rallying off five shots in the next 15 minutes. Shots by Torres and sophomore Luke Curran (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Jospeh) both forced saves by the Waynesburg netminder. Additionally, senior Logen Mackey (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) had an opportunity that went off the woodwork.

The Yellow Jackets successfully held off the W&J attacks and got their chance to double their advantage, taking a 2-0 advantage into the halftime interval. Although being down 2-0, W&J outshot Waynesburg 8-4 in the opening 45 minutes. Both teams had three corner kick opportunities in the first half.

The second half became a completely new contest as both teams were assessed matching red cards shortly before halftime, meaning the remaining 45 minutes were to be played 10 vs 10. The Yellow Jackets were looking like they were going to net a third goal, but the Presidents' back line held strong to keep the contest within reach.

W&J cut the deficit in half when Davis nets home a header on a free kick sent into the 18-yard box by Patterson. The Presidents kept pushing for an equalizer, rallying off four additional chances to knot the game up. Two important saves by the Yellow Jackets' goalkeeper on chances by Patterson and junior Derek Errett (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry), along with a shot off the crossbar kept the one goal advantage for Waynesburg. Ultimately, the Yellow Jackets hung on and took the victory 2-1.

Sophomore Logan Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.

The Red & Black return home to Alexandre Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 3) for their Senior Recognition match. W&J will play hosts to the Geneva Golden Tornadoes at 1:00 p.m. with a ceremony honoring the Class of 2027 prior to kickoff.
