Five Presidents Score in Homecoming Victory Over Thiel

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team (5-4-1, 4-2-1) continued their unbeaten streak with a 5-0 victory over the Thiel Tomcats (4-8-1, 1-5-1).

Freshman Benjamin Ochoa (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) led the Presidents with a goal and three shots. Sophomores Jonathan Barahona (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora) and Luke Curran (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Jospeh) had a goal and two shots on target. Additionally, freshman Gavin Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) had four shots and a goal.

The Presidents got off to a strong offensive start as junior Derek Errett (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and senior captain Owen Rowlands (Hazle Township, Pa./Wyoming Seminary Prep) both hit the crossbar in the opening 11 minutes of action. W&J continued to press forward and opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Barahona slots home a cross from senior Tavan Schoenberger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) for his first goal of the season. The Red & Black took their one goal lead into halftime. W&J outshot Thiel 10-6 in the opening 45 minutes.

W&J opened the second half expanding on their lead as sophomore Luke Curran (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Jospeh) nets scored his first collegiate goal. Approximately 90 seconds later, Patterson makes it 3-0 by converting a penalty kick.

Thiel did not go away and continued to try and get back into the contest. The W&J back line made a crucial team save to keep the clean sheet intact.

The Red & Black extended their lead to four as Ochoa scored his first collegiate goal with the assist going to sophomore Camden Ash (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin). The sophomore records his second assist of the contest by setting up senior Hudson Moyer (Westerville, Ohio/Tree of Life Christian School) for his first collegiate goal to round out the scoring and give W&J the 5-0 victory. The Red & Black outshot Thiel 24-11.

Sophomore Logan Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) got the start and recorded six saves in 85 minutes played. Classmate Finn Grinnell (Mount Joy, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) made his second appearance this season and played five minutes during the combined clean sheet.
