WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team (0-7) fell by a 14-6 score to the Penn State Behrend Lions (3-5) in a Sunday afternoon match at Henry Natatorium.
The Presidents honored
Adam Brock (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch),
Timothy Deutsch (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) and
Dillon Parker (Nipomo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) prior to the match, as part of Senior Recognition ceremonies.
Parker and junior
Brody Souder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Presidents offensively with two goals apiece in the setback. Freshman goalkeeper
Michael Stefanko (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) reached double digits in saves for the Presidents.
Behind a goal each from Parker and Deutsch, W&J used some early momentum to build an early 2-1 advantage midway through the first quarter. However, the Lions countered with three-straight goals to pull in front. Souder registered a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the opening frame to cut the Lions' lead to 4-3 at the end of the first.
The two teams battled through a defensive-minded second quarter. The lone score of the quarter for the Presidents came from Souder, who found the back of the goal at the 3:03 mark. Penn State Behrend took a 6-4 advantage into halftime.
PSB pulled away throughout the final two quarters. The Lions scored all four goals during the third to strengthen their lead to 10-4 as the game headed into the fourth.
W&J scored back-to-back goals to open the final quarter.
Hector Santaella (Key Biscayne, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) and Parker accounted for the scores. PSB was able to regain momentum, tallying the final four goals to secure the victory.
The Presidents return to action on October 24-25 when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to compete in the MPSF Conference Games at Johns Hopkins University. The Presidents will take on Austin, Connecticut College, Augustana and the host Blue Jays at the two-day event.
