Men’s Soccer Drops Road Match to Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the Franciscan University Barons in a Presidents' Athletic Conference road match.

Sophomore Jonathan Barahona (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora) and junior Zach Casey (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) led the Presidents with two shots, one of which being on frame. Sophomore Cam Ash (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and freshman Gavin Patterson (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) both recorded two shots as well. Six additional Presidents recorded shots in the contest.

Franciscan got off to a strong start by taking a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. The Barons used that boost to push for a brace, but the W&J defense held strong to keep the game 1-0. Junior Derek Errett (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) had a chance to equalize, but the Franciscan goalkeeper made an important save. Additionally, sophomore Brett Moyer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) had a chance towards the end of the half that got blocked and the Barons went into the locker room with a one-goal advantage.

The Barons got the start they wanted in the second half, scoring a brace to take a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute. Franciscan pushed for a third goal, but the W&J defense held strong. Sophomore goalkeeper Logan Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) came up with four important saves during the stretch. Additionally, Casey recorded a team save when the junior cleared the ball away from the goal line to keep the Presidents in the match.

W&J used the string of saves to try and turn the tides as Casey and Barahona both required the Franciscan netminder to record saves to keep the 2-0 advantage. W&J continued to try and get back into the contest, but the Barons defense held strong to take the 2-0 victory.

Joseph played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded a career high nine saves throughout the contest.

W&J returns home to Alexandre Stadium on Tuesday (Oct. 20) for a 7:30 kickoff against the Grove City Wolverines.
