Field Hockey Drops NCAC Contest to Denison, 5-0

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team (1-11, 1-8) were upended by a 5-0 final score to the first place Denison Big Red (13-2, 9-0) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game Tuesday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.

Capriana Romano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) put up the sole shot on the afternoon for the Presidents. Irelyn O'Reilly (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) finished the conference clash with one defensive save.

The Presidents held the top team in the NCAC to two goals through the first half, 2-0. The Big Red outshot the Red & Black by a 10-1 differential through the opening half. W&J limited the oppositions opportunities on the offensive end, only allowing four corners through the first two quarters. Within the first minute of play in the second quarter, Romano and Jessica Nakanishi (Susanville, Calif./Lassen) set up a pass and go that resulted in the first and only shot on the day for the Presidents.

Denison came into the second half with aggression, putting 14 shots toward the goal. Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) saved all shots but one in the third quarter, down 3-0. W&J also fended off all but one penalty corner in the third quarter.

The Big Red added on two additional goals in the fourth quarter en route to a 5-0 victory.

Erhard finished the afternoon one save away from her career high with 18 saves. Erhard is currently second in the W&J record book in single season saves with 140 on the season so far. Heather Browne holds the record following her 2003 season where she saved 146 shots.

The Presidents return to Cameron Stadium for their final game of the season against Allegheny on Saturday (Oct. 31). Action is set to commence on Halloween at 12:00 p.m.
