GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team (1-5, 1-3) fell to the DePauw Tigers (6-2, 4-0) by a 7-0 scoreline.
Junior
Jessica Nakanishi (Susanville, Calif./Lassen) led the Presidents with three shots on target throughout the contest. Additionally, sophomore
Bella Updyke (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) had an additional shot on target.
The Tigers got out to an early three goal lead after the opening 15 minutes before adding on two additional goals in the second quarter.
W&J kept fighting to get back in the contest. Pressure by the Presidents' defense forced a turnover and Updyke got a chance on the counter attack. Later in the third quarter, the Presidents' forced another turnover and Nakanishi fired a shot on goal, requiring the DePauw goalkeeper to make another save.
The Presidents had two more chances in the final frame. The first was a shot from the edge of the circle by Nakanishi and the other was a redirection in front of the cage by Updyke. The DePauw defense held strong and the Tigers ultimately took the 7-0 victory.
Junior
Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Red & Black and recorded seven saves throughout the contest.
W&J returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 10) when the team travels to face the Oberlin Yeowomen. The opening faceoff from Oberlin, Ohio is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
