MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team (6-2, 4-2) fall 7-0 to the Allegheny Gators (5-1, 5-0) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference dual that played out in two parts due to weather.
Allegheny got off to a strong start, taking all three doubles matches on their home court back on Saturday (Sept. 19). Senior captain
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and sophomore
Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) battled in a highly contested No. 1 doubles match but ultimately fell in a set tiebreak, 7-6 (10-8).
A storm on the original contest date forced a postponement of the matches shortly after singles play began. As per PAC guidelines, the singles matches took place here at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.
Sets in three of the six singles matches were decided by one break of serve. Sophomore
Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) forced extra tennis in the opening set at No. 3 singles, but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-2. Loomis overcame dropping the first set 6-1 and battled to a 6-4 second set. Additionally, Moorhead fought hard and required the reigning PAC Player and Newcomer of the Year to find an extra gear to take the 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
The Presidents return to the court on Wednesday (Oct. 7) when they travel to take on the Saint Francis Red Wolves. Action will get underway at 6:00 p.m. at Mansion Park in Altoona, Pa.
