BETHANY, W. Va. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team (5-6-0, 3-3-0) picked up all three points with a 4-0 victory against the Bethany Bison (0-11-2, 0-6-0) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup.
Junior
Alexa Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) led the Presidents with a goal and four total shots. Sophomore
Katelyn Burley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) also recorded a goal on two shots. Additionally, junior
Madison Rose (Butler, Pa./Butler) had six shots throughout the match. Senior captain
Maura Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) had three shots on target as well.
W&J got the start they wanted and took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Taylor slotted home a centralized pass from senior captain
Dove Corrette-Bennett (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock). Both teams traded opportunities in response for the goal, but neither team found their way through the defense and W&J took a narrow 1-0 lead into halftime. The Red & Black outshot the Bison in the opening 45 minutes.
W&J pushed to extend their lead from the second half kickoff. W&J recorded six chances in the opening 15 minutes and forced the Bethany goalkeeper to make two saves. Rose had three opportunities, freshman
Zailey Tillar (Annapolis, Md./Key School) had two, and Taylor had another. The Red & Black continued to control possession and got their brace in the 73
rd minute when they forced a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Junior
Kara Day (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) took the opportunity to slot the free kick just under the crossbar for her first collegiate goal.
The brace was the spark W&J needed as two additional Presidents recorded their first collegiate goals within the next 10 minutes to help round out the 4-0 victory. Sophomore
Katelyn Burley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) got a set piece goal from a designed corner kick play. Classmate
Rylin Bugosh (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) was credited with the assist on the Burley goal. Additionally, freshman
Aleia Eagle (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) recorded her first collegiate tally on an overlapping play. Sophomores
Mela Barnhart (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Lexie Coen (Washington, Pa./Trinity) both helped set up the Eagle goal. The assist gave Coen her first collegiate point as well.
Senior
Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) picked up her fourth shutout of the season and helped anchor a W&J back line who only allowed four shots on target throughout the contest.
The Presidents return home to Alexandre Stadium on Friday (Oct. 9) when they host the Thiel Tomcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
