GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team (17-6,10-4) powered pas the Theil Tomcats (6-16,3-11) in weekend conference play on the road, 80-67.
Matt Seidl (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the way for the Presidents with a season-high 21 points. The senior captain shot 9-for-11 (81.8%) from the field was flawless from three-point land (2-for-2). Seidl additionally added five steals and four rebounds. Joining Seidl in double figure scoring was
Nathan Plotner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) (14),
Matthew Carte (Ravenswood, W.Va./Ravenswood) (12) and
Cameron Rowell (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) (12).
The Presidents jumped out to an early 7-0 lead to open the Presidents' Athletic Conference weekend clash. Carte capped the run with three free throws after being fouled on a attempt from beyond the arc. Thiel responded with a 7-0 run of their own before the Presidents entered another scoring barrage.
Alex Acosta's (Acworth, Ga./North Cobb) made free throws gave the Presidents a 25-11 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half.
Rowell and Seidl helped cushion the W&J lead prior to the half, sporting a 45-28 lead at the end of the first half. Rowell led the team through the opening 20 with 12 points and three steals. Seidl also found himself in double figures with 10 points, a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
W&J kept their foot on the gas out of the halftime break, growing a 31-point lead, 69-38. Seidl contributed 11 points to the opening run in the second half with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Despite the Tomcats periodically chipping away at the W&J lead, the Presidents coasted to an 80-67 victory.
The Presidents managed to win the turnover battle (23-26), a key to victory for the Red & Black this season. W&J also took advantage of fast break scoring (18-14) and creating points from turnovers (26-20). The team also held a slight edge in points in the paint, 44-42.
W&J returns to the Salvitti Family Gymnasium for a two-game homestand prior to the conclusion of the 2025-26 regular season. The Presidents are scheduled to play Bethany on Wednesday (Feb. 18) at 5:30 p.m. to kick off the week of home games.
