Men’s Basketball Secures Top Seed in PAC South with Rout of Waynesburg University

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team (19-6, 12-4) handled the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets (7-20, 3-13) to secure the No. 1 seed in the Presidents' Athletic Conference South Division, 93-65.

The Presidents honored all seven seniors this afternoon including Matt Seidl (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), Josh Chambers (Hanover, Md./Indian Creek), Alex Acosta (Acworth, Ga./North Cobb), Nick Colucci (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), Connor Roberts (Washington, Pa./Trinity), Raine Gratzmiller (Butler, Pa./Butler) and Brandon Learn (New Stanton, Pa./Hempfield).

Leading the Presidents on the day was Seidl with a 14-point performance. The senior captain added five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Chambers and Nathan Plotner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) also contributed 11 points. Acosta wrapped W&J scorers in double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds.

With Seidl leading a grouping of four fellow seniors to start the regular season finale, the Presidents battled to a 7-5 lead prior to the first stoppage. Chambers contributed five points while Roberts scored the first points of a game on a layup. With the season starters subbed in, W&J quickly expanded the lead to 16 with 11 minutes remaining in the opening half, 24-8.

The Yellow Jackets brought the Red & Black lead to within three before W&J entered another offensive run. A layup by Cameron Rowell (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) put W&J up 46-29. A dunk by Plotner helped the Presidents take a 50-34 lead into the half. W&J excelled on the break in the opening half, scoring 22 points off turnovers. The team also shot 55.6% from the field in the first half.

The Presidents kept their foot on the gas out of the break, growing their advantage to 25 points off a Seidl triple. In a three-minute span, Colucci contributed six points as the Presidents went up 80-52. Chambers added four points down the stretch, securing his season-high in points with 11. Torrien Perkins (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) made the last points of the contest in his home debut with the team, 93-65.

W&J dominated the rebounding battle (45-32) and won the turnover differential (20-10). The Presidents also held large advantages in points off of turnovers (37-9), bench points (53-26), paint points (56-26) and fast break points (24-9).

With the top seed in the South Division, the Presidents will now host a home PAC Quarterfinals game against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes on Tuesday (Feb. 24). The postseason opener has a scheduled start time of 8:00 p.m.
