WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team (15-5, 10-1 PAC) earned a dominant 76-47 victory over visiting Franciscan University of Steubenville (3-17, 0-11 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium Wednesday evening.
The victory, which is the fourth-straight for the Presidents in league play, coupled with Saint Vincent's loss to Waynesburg, moves the Red and Black into sole possession of first place in the PAC South Division.
Riley DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) put together an efficient offensive performance. She finished with a game-high 23 points in just 25 minutes. DeRubbo connected on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and drained all five of her three-point attempts. She added six rebounds to her stat totals.
Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) filled the stat sheet with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Marina Grado (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) recorded team highs in assists (6) and steals (3).
The Presidents outscored the Barons in all four quarters. W&J combined strong shooting with strong defense to build an 18-2 lead after the opening quarter of play. Loutsion recorded six of the first 10 points for the Presidents. Following the Barons only field goal of the opening quarter, the Presidents ripped off eight-straight points over the next four-plus minutes.
Back-to-back triples by DeRubbo extended the lead to 23 points at 37-14 with 3:29 remaining in the half. The Presidents led by a 39-19 margin at halftime.
The Presidents continued to dominate throughout the third quarter. A three-pointer by DeRubbo and a layup by Loutsion extended the advantage to 51-27 at the 6:04 mark. W&J closed the third with field goals by
Jacey Mullen (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield Local) and
Brooke Paylo (South Park, Pa./South Park) to lead 62-34 entering the fourth.
Highlighting the fourth quarter scoring was an offensive rebound and putback by
Jasmine Twitty (Rutherford, N.C./East Rutherford) and a three-point make by
Ava Capozzoli (Canonsburg, Pa./Chartiers-Houston).
W&J shot 52.5 percent (32-of-61) from the field as a team. The Presidents made 8-of-18 on three-point attempts. W&J shared the ball well throughout the evening, as they recorded assists on 23 of 32 made field goals. The Red and Black held a 45-35 advantage in rebounding.
The Presidents host Westminster on Saturday (Feb. 7) for its annual Think Pink Game, which benfits The Glock Foundation. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
