Women’s Tennis Closes Spring Break Trip with Win over Franciscan

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team (13-6) wrapped up play on the team's spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., with a 5-2 win over familiar Presidents' Athletic Conference foe, the Franciscan Barons (10-8).
 
W&J got off to a hot start by sweeping the doubles point. Freshman Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) and junior captain Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) won a tight 6-4 set at No. 1 doubles. The freshman tandem of Bella Graham (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) also won by the same scoreline at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) and Addy Jacobs (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) completed the sweep, winning the No. 3 doubles set in a 7-6 (1) tiebreaker.
 
The Presidents took this momentum into singles play with four individual wins. Moorhead continued her winning ways with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position. Hamade edged out a tight 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at the No. 4 position to pick up the Presidents' third point. Paugh clinched the overall dual victory with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 spot. Additionally, Loomis battled her way to pick up a fifth point for the Presidents, winning by a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 scoreline at No. 1 singles.
 
The Presidents will return after a short break for one final home match against the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets. The doubles matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. from the Janet Swanson Tennis Center with a senior recognition ceremony prior to.
