Baseball Blanks Geneva in Both Ends of Doubleheader Sweep

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson college baseball (11-2, 2-0) opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of the Geneva Golden Tornadoes (8-6, 0-2). The Presidents did not allow a run on the day, winning both games 16-0 and 4-0.

Game One – W&J 16, Geneva 0

Freshman Seth Rosenfeld (Ellicott City, Md./Long Reach) led the W&J offense in game one, finishing the opener going 3-for-4 with six RBIs and a grand slam. Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) finished game one with two RBIs and one hit. Eight additional W&J batters registered one hit each. Andrew Miko (Portage, Pa./Portage) led the team in walks with four.

Stern opened the top of the first inning with a double to score the first run of the game, 1-0. Rosenfeld kept the offense churning with his first collegiate grand slam a few batters later to go up 5-0. Rosenfeld also scored the first run of the fourth inning off a wild pitch. Stern wrapped the scoring of the fourth with a sacrifice flyout, 9-0.

Miko worked a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth inning to help the Presidents reach the 10-run mercy rule. Tyler Maddix (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) hit an RBI single through the left side to advance the runners from station to station with the bases loaded. Rosenfeld batted in two more runs with a double down the left field line. A sacrifice fly from Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) capped the sixth inning, scoring with the W&J advantage up to 14-0.

W&J added two additional runs in the top of the seventh en route to the shortened 16-0 victory in seven innings.

Anthony Pass (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) set the table for the W&J offense, pitching 6.0 one-hit innings with six punchouts for the win. Pass now moves to 4-0 on the season. Nate Nolan (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) finished the game in the seventh inning to ensure the win.

Game Two – W&J 16, Geneva 0

Eight Presidents finished the game with at least one hit including Keegan Carr (Irwin, Pa./Norwin / Indiana University of Pennsylvania), Jack Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), Zain Jadallah (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington), Carl Wagner (Honey Brook, Pa./Westtown School), Teddy Platt (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), Miko and Stern. Miko finished game two with two hits and three runs batted in. Carr walked three times in the second game of the conference twinbill.

Both units remained scoreless through the first five inning before the Presidents broke through the scoring drought in the top of the sixth inning. Miko drove in the first run of the game on a single to center field which scored Anderson from second, 1-0.

W&J added two additional insurance runs in the top of the eighth to go up 3-0. Carr walked and Dezenzo ripped a double to trigger a change of pitcher in the first two at bats of the frame. Miko came through again for the Presidents, scoring two more runs on a two-out double to left center field.

The Presidents added one final run in the top of the ninth for good measure to reach their final score of 4-0.

Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) pitched a gem for the Presidents in game two, picking up the win and moving to 3-0 on the season. The junior pitched 8.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Alvarez struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth in 11 pitches to ensure the victory.
