Softball Falls in Both Ends of PAC Doubleheader Against Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College softball team (5-9, 1-3) falls in a doubleheader against the Grove City Wolverines (10-2, 2-0). The Wolverines took game one 3-2 and followed it up with a 6-2 win in game two.

W&J 2, Grove City 3

Senior Hannah Allen (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) led the Presidents offensively, going 2-for-3 and scoring one run.

The Wolverines got the bats hot early, scoring two runs in the opening frame. The W&J defense settled in and held Grove City to four scoreless innings, led by senior pitcher Kaylee Witner (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School).

The Presidents put a rally together in the top of the sixth inning to keep them in the game. Senior Julia DiPietro-Harvey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) doubled to left-center field. An error by the Wolverines allowed DiPietro-Harvey to score and cut the deficit to only one run.

The Wolverines extended their lead back up to two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but W&J did not go away. Allen singled, and smart baserunning allowed the senior to advance to second from a Grove City error. Junior Mirranda Rinehart (Washington, Pa./Trinity) singled down the left field line to score the Allen from second.

Ultimately, the Presidents ran out of out and Grove City took the game one win 3-2

Witner pitched all 6.0 innings and had two strikeouts. The senior forced three flyouts and 12 groundouts in 82 pitches thrown.

W&J 2, Grove City 6

Allen and DiPietro-Harvey both went 2-for-3 from the plate in the second game of this evening's doubleheader. DiPietro-Harvey also drew a walk in a fourth at-bat. Three Presidents went 1-for-3 in game two, and either scored a run or drove one in.

Similar to game one, the Wolverines took an early lead. Grove City took a 3-1 lead after the second inning. The run for W&J started off with Rinehart hitting another down the left field line; this time for two bases. Sophomore Anna Luxenberger (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) singled to right field to score Rinehart and get the Presidents on the board.

W&J put together three scoreless defensive innings in game two as well. The defense limited pitcher Braelyn Altman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) to only 23 pitches through the middle innings. The Presidents cut the lead down to one in the top of the sixth. Freshman Aliza Michielli (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) picked up her first collegiate hit on a double to right field. The following batter, freshman Bella Stewart (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell), singled to bring home Michielli.

Grove City found an extra push of energy to drive home three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the series win with a 6-2 victory in game two.

The Presidents return to the diamond on Saturday (March 28) for a two-game series against the Franciscan Barons. First pitch from Brooks Park will be at 1:00 p.m. with a ceremony for the class of 2026 seniors prior to the start of game one.
