NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (15-3) dropped its first game since the spring break trip to the Muskingum Fighting Muskies (9-12), 7-0. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak that began in the second game of a doubleheader with Calvin (March 9).
Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) and
Tommy Dietrich (Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) each led the team offensively, going 2-for-3 on the night.
Jack Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum),
Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and
Teddy Platt (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) each had hits on the evening as well.
Tyler Maddix (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) and
Rhys Arnold (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) each worked walks for the Presidents.
W&J posted a productive start to the nonconference clash as Dezenzo doubled in the second at-bat. An Anderson hit by pitch put runners on first and second, but the Fighting Muskies escaped unscathed. Muskingum then jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
In the following three innings, the Presidents left five runners stranded despite holding Muskingum scoreless. The Fighting Muskies knocked in unearned runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings as extra insurance.
W&J continued to create scoring opportunities in the closing innings, seeing
Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) reach third in the sixth before the Fighting Muskies escaped untarnished again as they ultimately went on to win 7-0.
Bobby Budacki (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton Area) got the start and was credited with the loss in 2.0 innings of work with one strikeout.
Chase Perry (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease) was the first in line for relief work on the night, pitching 2.0 innings allowing Muskingum's last earned run of the ball game.
Nate Nolan (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny),
Jake Stiehl (Reston, Va./South Lakes),
Max Stanger (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph Collegiate) and Alvarez combined for solid relief work.
The Presidents get back to action at Ross Memorial Park in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with Allegheny on Saturday (April 4). The conference twinbill is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
