Men's Lacrosse Uses Fourth-Quarter Surge to Defeat Thiel, 12-10

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team (5-6, 2-1) picked up its second Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over the Thiel Tomcats (2-9, 1-3), 12-10.

Senior captain Braden Petrarco (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) and freshman Braydon Reighard (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) led the team offensively on the night with hat tricks. Petrarco had four goals with six ground balls, two caused turnovers and one assist. Reighard had three goals with two ground balls, one assist and one caused turnover. William Fenimore (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored two goals throughout the conference clash. Riley Bullock (Kennett Square, Pa./Wilmington Christian (Del.)), Ryan Mey (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and Noah Schratz (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) contributed a goal apiece.

Aaron Alfer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) led the Presidents in ground balls with nine and faceoff victories with nine of the 11 W&J wins. Jaxon Specht (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and Jack Dufalla (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had two caused turnovers on the evening.

The Presidents got off to a hot start in the opening quarter, netting six goals in the first 15  minutes of action. Bullock got the scoring barrage started with an unassisted heater to the back of the net for the game-opening goal at the 12:47 mark. Reighard and Petrarco each scored in succession as the Presidents went up 3-0. Despite three goals from the Tomcats in the opening quarter, Petrarco and Fenimore netted three goals combined to help W&J take a 6-3 advantage into the second quarter.

Thiel flipped the script on the Presidents in the second quarter, outscoring W&J 4-1. Reighard scored the lone goal of the frame for the Presidents, heading into the half tied, 7-7.

The stalemate between conference foes continued through the third quarter, as each unit scored one goal. The Tomcats went up early in the quarter with a power play goal at the 7:58 mark, 8-7. Schratz scored a goal with 20 seconds remaining to knot the score back at eight.

In the fourth quarter, both team still remained in a deadlock after trading two goals each, 10-10. Reighard broke the tie for the final time at the 3:55 mark off a dish from Mey. Petrarco added an insurance goal through a man-up opportunity with 3:11 remaining as the Presidents held the 12-10 lead for the win.
