Baseball Downed by Ranked Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (20-6) was downed by No. 11/14 ranked Mount Union (24-6), 17-5 on Sunday afternoon.

The Presidents were led by senior utility Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) who went 2-for-3 on the day with three RBIs and one walk. Alex Shank (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington), Jack Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), Seth Rosenfeld (Ellicott City, Md./Long Reach), Ben Schuler (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and Jackson Stocker (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) all had hits on the day.

The Presidents entered the Sunday nonconference matchup strong, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Anderson drew in the first run of the game on an RBI fielder's choice, 1-0. Three batters later, Alvarez smacked a three-run homer over the left field fence to put W&J up 4-0.

The worst was yet to come for the Presidents, seeing the Purple Raiders respond with all 17 runs within the next seven innings. The Presidents remained silent offensively until the top of the eighth inning when Tyler Maddix (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) hit a sacrifice flyout to score Alvarez.

The Presidents saw eight different pitchers reach the mound on the day, starting with junior Thomas McLaren (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) who opened the contest. Max Stanger (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph Collegiate) and Eli Montgomery (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) both had scoreless innings of work.

W&J baseball looks to get back on track with a weekday Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with Saint Vincent on Tuesday (April 14). Game one has a scheduled start time of 1:00 p.m.
