GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (24-7) picked up a mercy-rule victory over the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats (8-20) on the road in nonconference play, 15-2.
Jack Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) led the way for the offense, going 4-for-4 from the plate with four RBIs and a double.
Andrew Miko (Portage, Pa./Portage) (3-for-3) and Tommy Deitrich (2-for-2) also finished perfect on the day. Miko had three RBIs while Deitrich had one RBI.
Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) also went 2-for-3 with two RBI. With a double on the day, Dezenzo tied the W&J single-season doubles record.
The Presidents got out to a hot start, scoring four runs in the opening innings. Anderson scored Dezenzo in the first inning off a double down the left field line to put W&J on the board, 1-0. After leaving bases loaded in the first, the Presidents drove in those three missed runs in the top of the second.
Keegan Carr (Irwin, Pa./Norwin / Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and Anderson each hit RBI singles while Miko hit a sacrifice flyout to end the early run, 4-0.
The Bobcats scored their first run of the nonconference clash in the bottom of the third to reduce the W&J lead to 4-1.
W&J mustered a 10-run top of the fourth inning in response to the Bobcats score, taking a 14-1 lead. The Presidents hit seven singles and three doubles in the frame. Anderson hit two RBI singles in the inning after Dezenzo tied the program's single-season doubles record.
Ben Schuler (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) added an additional run in the fifth frame that scored
Jackson Stocker (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) before W&J coasted to the 15-2 victory.
Brady Dojonovic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) was credited with his first victory of the season, tossing 4.0 innings with six strikeouts.
Thomas McLaren (Mars, Pa./Mars Area),
Chase Perry (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease) and
Justin Giarrusso (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) all pitched one inning of relief.
The Presidents return to Ross Memorial Park for a three-game homestand starting with a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup against Franciscan. First pitch of game one in Washington is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
