Late Run Lifts Baldwin Wallace Past W&J in Battle of Ranked Teams

WASHINGTON, Pa. – In a battle of Top 25 teams and perennially contenders in the Mideast Region of Division III baseball, the 17th ranked Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets (25-8) edged out the 23rd ranked Washington & Jefferson College Presidents (26-8) by a 3-2 score in a non-conference game Thursday evening at Ross Memorial Park.

Leading the Presidents offensively was freshman third baseman Seth Rosenfeld (Ellicott City, Md./Long Reach), who collected a multi-hit effort. Rosenfeld finished with two hits and two runs scored in Thursday's game.

The Top 25 out-of-conference showdown featured a pair of offenses that average near double-digit runs per contest. However, pitching ruled the day, as both offenses found run-scoring opportunities hard to come by.

Baldwin Wallace opened the scoring in the second inning, putting a runner on base with a one-out double before using a two-out single to take a 1-0 advantage.

W&J responded in the third inning with a run of its own. Consecutive singles by Rosenfeld, junior Teddy Platt (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and sophomore Keegan Carr (Irwin, Pa./Norwin / Indiana University of Pennsylvania) loaded the bases for the Red and Black. Senior Josh Dezenzo (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) battled through an at-bat and produced a sac fly that scored Rosenfeld to even the score at 1-1.

A pair of nifty defensive plays by Platt helped W&J hold B-W off the board in the top of the fifth. Rosenfeld then led off the fifth inning with a solo home run over the left center field fence. Rosenfeld's fourth home run of his rookie campaign gave the Presidents a 2-1 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets answered quickly, using a two-out opposite field solo home run in the top of the sixth to knot the score at 2-2.

Baldwin Wallace's bullpen shut down the Presidents' offense over the final three-plus innings. The Yellow Jackets retired the Presidents in order the final three innings.

The visitors scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the top of the eighth. Carson Petrecca, who went 4-for-4 in the game, laced an RBI double deep to center that gave Baldwin Wallace the 3-2 advantage. After not striking out once in the first seven innings of play, four of the final five W&J batters were retired on strikes.

Chase Perry (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease) started and worked five strong innings. Perry scattered five hits and struck out a pair during his outing. Anthony Pass (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) surrendered a run during his one inning of relief. Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) worked a scoreless seventh inning. Max Stanger (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph Collegiate) suffered the loss, allowing the go-ahead run to score in the eighth. Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) tossed a scoreless ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.

The Presidents aim to return to the win column when they travel to Chatham University for a conference doubleheader on Saturday (April 25). First pitch for the twinbill at West Field is scheduled for 11 a.m.
