WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team (27-10) falls 6-4 in ten innings to the Marietta Pioneers (11-20). The two teams split the season series as the Presidents took game one back in March.
Freshman
Seth Rosenfeld (Ellicott City, Md./Long Reach) led the Presidents at the plate by batting a perfect 3-for-3. Rosenfeld also drove in two runs, scored one, and drew a walk. Junior
Jack Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) batted 3-for-5 and scored a run. Additionally, classmate
Carl Wagner (Honey Brook, Pa./Westtown School) hit 3-for-4.
The two squads opened with four scoreless innings. Marietta broke the ice with a four-run top of the fifth. W&J responded right after and got on the board with a run of their own. Rosenfeld sent a ball over the left-field wall for his fifth of the season to bring the Pioneer lead down to three.
The Presidents held the Pioneer offense scoreless for the remainder of regulation. Offensively, the Presidents slowly cut into the deficit by getting a run in the last three innings and took the game to extras. Consecutive singles in the seventh set up Rosenfeld to hit a ball into right field and score Anderson. Junior
Zac Stern (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) doubled in the eighth. Aggressive baserunning allowed him to score and cut the deficit to 4-3. Finally, pinch runner Rhy Arnold scored from a single by junior
Teddy Platt (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) to tie the contest at 4 in the bottom of the ninth.
Marietta scored two runs in the tenth inning and stopped one final rally by the Red & Black to take the overall win 6-4 after ten innings of play.
Junior
Brady Dojonovic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) got his first collegiate start in the contest. Dojonovic pitched two innings and only allowed one hit. Seven additional pitchers made appearances throughout the contest. Senior Justin Giaruso struck out two batters and didn't allow a hit during his inning of work. Additionally, junior
Bobby Budacki (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton Area) recorded one strikeout in one inning of relief.
W&J returns to the diamond when they travel to take on the Bethany Bison for one final Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday (May 1). First pitch for game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.
