WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson College women's soccer team (2-2) bested the visiting La Roche Redhawks (1-2), 3-0.
Junior
Alexa Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./OLSH) led the Presidents with nine shots throughout the contest and one of the three goals scored. Additionally, sophomore
Natalie Faingnaert (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) three out of four shots on goal and netted one as well.
The Presidents got off to a strong start offensively and had eight shots in the opening 15 minutes. Senior captain
Maura Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) and sophomore
Katelyn Burley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) both found the woodwork during this opening stretch.
W&J continued to control possession in the opening 45 minutes, rallying off 12 shots throughout the first half. The Red & Black were also awarded five corner kicks during the first stanza, but to no avail as the contest was scoreless going into the halftime interval.
Coming out of the halftime interval, W&J continued to apply the pressure and recorded an additional nine shots prior to the 72
nd minute of action. The Presidents ultimately broke through as Faingnaert opened the scoring in the 76
th minute following an assist from Burley. Thirty seconds later, W&J scored a brace as Taylor recorded her third goal of the season on a header from a Heberle cross.
The Presidents continued to apply pressure as sophomore
Bridget Callihan (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) rounded out the scoring following a through ball from classmate
Madison Rose (Butler, Pa./Butler) to give W&J the 3-0 victory. The Presidents finished the contest with 35 total shots.
Defensively, W&J earned their second shutout of the season. The Presidents' back line successfully held the Presidents' back line to zero shots for the entirety of the contest. Sophomore
Adysson Davis (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) and senior
Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) each played a half in goal during the combined shutout.
The Presidents return to the pitch on Wednesday (Sept. 16) when they travel to take on the Hiram Terriers in their first Presidents' Athletic Conference fixture of the season. Kickoff from Hiram, Ohio is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
