WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team (2-3) picked up a 5-1 victory against the Saint Francis Red Wolves (0-4) in the first ever meeting on record between the two teams.
Senior
Logen Mackey (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) led the Presidents with a goal and three total shots off the bench. Sophomore
Camden Ash (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) also had two shots on target and netted a goal. Three other Presidents had goals throughout the contest as well.
The Presidents got off to a hot start, scoring their opening goal in the second minute. Senior
Tavan Schoenberger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) opened the scoring with the assist going to sophomore
Jacek Piekut (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice). W&J kept up the offensive pressure and doubled their advantage in the 14
th minute following the first collegiate goal by sophomore
Logan Crowe (Avella, Pa./McGuffey). Mackey extended the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 31
st minute. This tally was Mackey's first goal since returning from a lengthy injury.
The Presidents kept up the offensive pressure as freshman
Ryan Noel (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) slots home his first collegiate goal to give the Presidents the 4-0 lead going into the halftime interval. Sophomore
Brett Moyer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and junior
Brian Lowry (Wenonah, N.J./Gloucester) both were credited with an assist on the goal. This was Lowry's first collegiate point.
The Red Wolves came out of the break trying to find a spark of offense and rallied off four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Saint Francis got themselves on the board in the 76
th minute to cut the W&J lead to three. The Presidents responded with a goal of their own in the 86
th minute to round out the 5-1 victory. Ash recorded his first collegiate goal and freshman
Nicolas Squeglia (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) recorded his first assist. Overall, the President offense outshot the Red Wolves 18-7 and won the corner battle 5-2.
Sophomore
Logan Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) got the start in goal for the Presidents. Joseph made one save in just under an hour played. Classmate
Finn Grinnell (Mount Joy, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) made his first collegiate appearance and recorded a save in just over a half hour on the pitch.
W&J returns on Saturday (Sept. 26) when the team travels to take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats. Kickoff from Latrobe, Pa. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
