Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team (5-1, 2-1) picks up a 7-0 win against the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets (5-4, 1-3) for the team's third consecutive victory.
W&J got off to a strong start, sweeping all three doubles to take an early 1-0 lead. Senior captain
Claire Loomis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and sophomore
Keiran Moorhead (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) started things off with a 6-1 victory at No.1 doubles. Junior captain
Mackenzie Gumto (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) and sophomore
Maya Hamade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) picked up a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. Sophomore classmates
Bella Graham (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and
Austyn Paugh (Jane Lew, W.Va./Notre Dame) rounded out the doubles with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Loomis took the momentum gained in doubles into singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 slot. Paugh got the victory with a straightforward 6-2, 6-1 scoreline at No. 6. Additionally, freshman
Keira Ross (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) came through at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-2 win. At No. 3, Hamade overcame a tough 7-5 first set to claim the win in the second, 6-0. Similarly, Moorhead had a 7-5 scoreline in the opening frame at No. 1 and found a rhythm to close it out 6-2 in the second. Graham rounded out the points by battling to a 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory at the No. 4 position.
W&J returns to the court on Friday (Oct. 2) when they host the Franciscan Barons. Matches will begin from the Janet Swanson Tennis Center at 4:00 p.m.
