LORETTO, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's volleyball team (4-11,0-2) picked up a road sweep over the Saint Francis Red Wolves (5-7), 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-17).
Brielle Moorhouse (East Liberty, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) highlighted the evening with a career milestone, passing 2,000 career assists with 16 on the night. Moorhouse has now accumulated 2,015 career assists in a Presidents' uniform.
Cali Dagen (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led the team offensively with 14 kills and two service aces.
Rian Benz (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) finished the three-set match with six kills and two total blocks.
Sydney Allen (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the team in service aces with three and digs with 15.
Abby Oldham (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) finished with a team-high four total blocks.
The Red Wolves got out to an early 9-5 lead after controlling the opening points in their first meeting. A kill by Benz sparked a flurry of four attack errors by Saint Francis to knot the set one score at 10. The Red Wolves answered with a nine-point swing to take a measurable 19-10 lead. Kill from
Eva McKnight (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) and Dagen brought the deficit down to six, 20-14. A Saint Francis service error helped the Presidents enter a five-point swing to bring them within striking distance, 21-19. The Red Wolves pushed their advantage to 24-21 before the Presidents battled back again. W&J closed out the opening set winning five-consecutive points off of two Allen service aces, one service error and two attack errors from the opposition, 26-24.
Following the set one victory, Saint Francis quickly gained the upper hand early on again as they grew a 7-2 lead. Dagen and
Stella Stossel (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) helped the Presidents work their way back, compiling their first lead of the second set, 11-10. The Presidents rode their momentum to a 18-13 lead before surrendering seven-straight Red Wolves points, down 20-18.
Lola Jacobs (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) helped W&J respond with a kill that halted the Saint Francis barrage.
Ayla Altman (Washington, Pa./Bishop Canevin) had back-to-back aces to the Red & Black's 7-3 stretch en route to the 25-23 second set win.
W&J cruised into the potential final set, creating a 13-6 lead. Benz and Moorhouse had kills to elevate the lead to 17-9. Trading points down the stretch, Dagen completed the sweep with a kill to end the third set, 25-17.
The Presidents return to action on Saturday (Oct. 3) on the road to face the No. 6 ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans at the Highmark Center. First serve is set for a 12:00 p.m. start in Pittsburgh.
