PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team (1-1) picked up their first win of the 2026 season with a 4-0 victory over the Carlow Celtics (0-1).
Junior
Alexa Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./OLSH) led the Presidents with a two-goal performance. Taylor finished the contest with six total shots, four of which were on frame.
W&J got on the offensive front foot early in the contest, as Taylor got the Presidents on the board in the sixth minute. Nearly one minute later, the Red & Black doubled their lead as freshman
Zailey Tillar (Annapolis, Md./Key School) nets her first collegiate goal. Senior captain
Maura Heberle (Georgetown, Pa./South Side Beaver) provided the assist.
The Presidents kept up the offensive play as freshman
Leilana Speney (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) also scored her first collegiate goal to give W&J the 3-0 lead. Classmate
Emma Paul (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal. The Red & Black held onto the advantage and went into the locker room up 3-0. W&J outshot Carlow 20-1 in the opening 45 minutes. The Red & Black also had nine corner kicks in the first frame.
Early in the second half, W&J drew a penalty. Taylor converted the opportunity to round out the 4-0 scoring. The Presidents continued to possess the ball and gaining opportunities throughout the rest of the second half and preserved the 4-0 shutout victory.
Defensively, the back line held the Celtics to only two shots throughout the contest. Senior
Molly Schoch (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) and sophomore
Adysson Davis (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) both played a half in goal throughout the win.
W&J returns home to Alexandre Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 9) when they take on the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats. The home opener will kickoff at 4:30 p.m.
