GAMBIER, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team (0-2, 0-1) opened North Coast Athletic Conference play with an 8-0 loss to the Kenyon Owls (2-0, 1-0).
W&J went down early in the first quarter as Kenyon scored a goal at the 8:19 mark to take a 1-0 lead.
Capriana Romano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) immediately countered on the offensive end with a shot that went wide. Neither team found the back of the cage for the remainder of the first half, as Keyon took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Owls opened the second half with three goals in the third quarter as the scoring drought ended, 4-0. Kenyon tacked on four more goals in the fourth quarter, holding the Presidents to no shots in the second half, en route to an 8-0 victory.
Grace Erhard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had a productive day in goal, saving 19 shots for a new career high.
The Presidents return to Washington for their home opener at Historic Cameron Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 12). The Presidents will face the Wilson Phoenix at 6:00 p.m.
