Three early goals power W&J past Bethany 4-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Brian Hanna scored twice within 5:01 to propel W&J to an early 2-0 lead and it never looked back in a 4-1 league win over Bethany at Alexandre Stadium.

With the victory, the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team moves to 6-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Bison drop to 2-14-0 on the season and 1-6-0 in the conference.

Hanna notched goals 10:38 and 15:39 into the match for his team-leading fifth and sixth scores of the year. Jason Yobbi hit a long cross that Hanna brought down from his chest to foot and finished on the ground to the middle of the net. Hanna's second score was assisted by Connor McKenzie and with just inside the left goal post from 30 yards out, freezing Bethany's keeper.

Chris Watson posted his first goal of the season in the 23rd minute to push the lead to 3-0 when he cleaned up a rebound in front of the cage.

The Bison got on the scoreboard at the 74:59-mark when Ryan Power put his head on a cross while running across the box from Jack Waters on a direct kick.

In the 80th minute, W&J's "French Connection" gave the Presidents an insurance goal when Yann Regnault (hometown: Toulouse, France) scored his first collegiate goal when he finished to the lower right corner off a long pass from Garrett French (real last name).

With an 18-5 margin in the first half, the Presidents doubled up the Bison on shots, 28-14. Hanna and Watson led with a game-high five shots apiece. Justin Carter and Sam Dudley each collected three shots.

Jon Best earned the win in goal, playing a clean first half with two saves. Ben Wilt made three saves in the second half.

W&J closes out the 2014 season when it hosts Thiel for Senior Day at Alexandre Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1.
