Presidents clinch spot in PAC Tournament with shutout triumph

WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania – Josie Madden recorded a five-point day with one goal and three assists as Washington & Jefferson earned the fourth and final spot in next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament after defeating Thiel 6-0 Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The Presidents (9-7-2, 5-3-1 PAC) return to the PAC Tournament after missing out on a spot in last year's field.  W&J will take on top-seeded Thomas More in Crestview Hills, Kentucky Wednesday at 2:00 pm.  Second-seeded Grove City hosts third-seeded Westminster in the other semifinal.

Mariah Lockard scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute as Madden lofted a corner kick pass near the goal line which Lockard eventually slipped into the net.

The score remained that way until early in the second half.  On another corner kick, Madden sailed a cross to Hayley Skovira, who headed home for a 2-0 lead.   Madden then got behind the TC defense and added another insurance goal with 25 minutes remaining.

In the 75th minute, Madden set up Aundrea Snyder for a goal before Tatiana Ruzzini found the back of the net two minutes later.  Jess Skovira ended the scoring on a free kick with 11 minutes left.

Morgan Kinyon made six saves to record her sixth shutout of the season.  Mary Oakey recorded four stops for the Tomcats (6-14, 4-5 PAC), who were outshot 19-10.

W&J and Thomas More have not met in PAC Tournament play since Nov. 3, 2009, when W&J upset the Saints 2-1 on the road in overtime in the conference semifinals.  Washington & Jefferson will be seeking its first PAC women's soccer championship since 2010.  The Presidents also claimed the 2008 and 2009 titles under Head Coach Pete Curtis.
