Johnson's career high not enough for Presidents in 74-71 loss

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Senior Doug Johnson knocked down a school record nine three-pointers, all in the first half, en route to a career-high 32 points, but W&J was unable to sustain a five-point halftime lead in a 74-71 loss at Juniata.

With the loss, the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team slides to 0-5 on the season while Juniata improves to 4-1.

Johnson scored the first 17 points of the game for the Presidents, helping to build a 17-12 lead at the 13:49-mark of the first half. The senior made triples on the four of the first six W&J possessions. The senior's lone miss from beyond-the-arc of the first half was at the 13:58-mark and he finished by connecting on his final five attempts from downtown of the opening frame en route to 29 points, already establishing a career high, breaking his previous mark of 28 points in last season's 74-68, double overtime win against Grove City on Feb. 12.

W&J held a 46-41 lead as Johnson accounted for 63 percent of the Presidents' scoring in the first 20 minutes.

Tyler Haas hit a triple of his own on the first trip down the court for W&J of the second half to make it an eight-point game 42 seconds in. The Eagles, however, used an 8-2 run to cut the lead to two points before a Haas jumper ended the run, 53-49, with 14:55 to play.

Down four points, 62-58, Juniata used a 9-0 run to open up a 67-62 lead with 5:45 remaining. W&J twice tied the game, lastly at 69-69, down the stretch, but were unable to reclaim the lead before falling 74-71.

Haas contributed 13 points and Mitch Locher added seven. Mike Resnik was held to a season-low five points, but posted six boards.

W&J opens the home portion of the 2014-15 slate with a 3 p.m. tip-off against Muskingum on Saturday, Nov. 29.
