WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Presidents had four players in double figures and senior
Valerie Dunlap recorded a career-high 17 rebounds for the second-straight game, but W&J was unable to hang on in a 94-89 overtime loss against Allegheny in the 2014-15 home opener.
With the loss, the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team drops to 2-1 on the season while Allegheny improves to 4-2.
Dunlap posted the 29th double-double of her career with 20 points and 17 rebounds while
Danni Medovich joined her with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Beka Bellhy contributed 13 points, six boards and three helpers before fouling out late in the second half.
Taylor Cortazzo was the fourth President with double digits in the score sheet at 12 points with five assists.
Alexa DelGreco had seven points to go with her team-best seven assists.
With the Presidents leading by one, 17-16, following a Gators' layup, W&J rattled off a 13-0 run over 2:03 to stretch the lead to 30-16 with 5:41 left in the first half. Bellhy scored six points during the run and Cortazzo and
Laura Primyon each knocked down three-pointers.
Primyon's second triple was sandwiched by two layups by Allegheny, but a pair of layups by
Katey Wilson put the lead to 37-20 with 3:51 remaining in the first half, before a 9-0 run by the guests cut the deficit to eight, 37-29, with 1:36 remaining. After a back-and-forth final portion, W&J led 42-33 through 20 minutes.
After trading baskets for the first four minutes of the second half, the Gators used a 9-0 run to tie the game, 54-54, with 14:06 to play in regulation. W&J used a 13-2 sprint to take the lead back out to 11 with Medovich book-ending the run with triples and Cortazzo knocking one down as well, 67-56.
A free throw by Dunlap at 8:57 had W&J in its biggest lead of the second half with a 12-point advantage at 70-58, but Allegheny responded with a 10-0 run and it was 70-68 as 4:20 showed in the second half.
W&J maintained the lead for the rest of the way until Marina Scarantino tied it, 81-81, with a triple with just under one second to play in the half, forcing overtime.
The two teams traded buckets to begin the OT session before DelGreco knocked down a triple to make it a three-point game, 86-83. After five-straight points by the Gators, Medovich struck from downtown to give W&J its final lead of the game, 89-88, with 2:39 to play. The visitors finished the game on a 6-0 run to earn the victory, however.
Emma Pellicano led all players with a career-high 33 points for Allegheny, while Kendall Hoffman matched her high-water mark with 21 points.
W&J continues non-conference play on Sunday, Nov. 30 with a 2 p.m. contest at Pitt-Greensburg.
