Bellhy career-best 31 points lead W&J to 69-56 win at UPG

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Behind a career-best 31 points from junior Beka Bellhy, the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team posted a 69-56 win at Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference action.

The victory moves the Presidents to 3-1 on the season and drops the Bobcats to 3-3.

Bellhy's performance came exactly one year after former President Chelsea Apke recorded 30 points against Carnegie Mellon during the 2013-14 campaign. Prior to that, the last time a W&J women's basketball player had gone over 30 points was on Feb. 11, 2006 when Amanda (Stanonik) McGuinness scored 32 against Thiel.

The Presidents opened up a 12-2 lead 4:31 into the game thanks to a 10-0 run with the game tied at 2-2. Bellhy accounted for eight of W&J's points during the spurt with two jumpers, two free throws and a layup.

UPG cut the margin to two points, 29-27, as late as 2:22 to play in the first half, but W&J score eight of the final 11 points of the period to take a 37-30 lead into intermission. 12 of Bellhy's 31 points came in the first half as well as all 11 of Danni Medovich's scores as the latter knocked down three triples in the opening 20 minutes.

After the Bobcats made it 47-44 with 10:53 to go, a three-point play by Bellhy gave W&J a 50-44 advantage. Later, Bellhy recorded layups on three-straight red and black possessions as the Presidents built the lead to 57-46 with 8:46 to play. In total, she scored 10-straight W&J points to push the game to 61-49 wit 7:16 on the clock.

Bellhy recorded 19 of the 32 points Washington & Jefferson scored in the second half, including 7-of-10 from the field. For the game, she made 11-of-20 field goals and pulled in eight rebounds in 31 minutes.

Valerie Dunlap collected nine points, 13 boards (her third-straight double-figure rebound game) and four blocks in the win. Alexa DelGreco tied for the game high with four assists and Erin Lavery hauled in six rebounds.

W&J opens up Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at Grove City.
