GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Presidents began the second half with a 14-0 run to recover from an 18-point showing in the first half in a 49-42 win at Grove City to open Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team trailed 26-18 through 20 minutes before scoring the first 14 points of the second half, while holding the Wolverines without a point for the first 7:04.
Valerie Dunlap hit a layup 1:30 into the second and
Taylor Cortazzo pulled up from three-point range just 29 seconds later to bring the guests within three points, 26-23, at the 18:01-mark, forcing a timeout by Grove City.
A jumper by
Beka Bellhy in the paint brought W&J within one and then a layup by Dunlap at 15:17 gave W&J the lead, 27-26. On the next trip down the court,
Alexa DelGreco knocked down a three-pointer to push the lead out to four points.
Twice W&J built its lead to 13 points in the second half, initially occurring at the 10:09-mark by
Erin Lavery, 42-29. A bucket by the hosts and then a pair of free throws by Dunlap pushed the lead back to 13.
Grove City would score the next nine points over a nearly five minute span before a pair of Dunlap free throws with 3:34 to play returned the lead to six points, 46-40.
W&J hit three free throws in the final 1:43 and allowed just a layup to seal the win.
Dunlap and DelGreco each scored a team-high 10 points, with Dunlap adding nine boards and four blocks. Bellhy contributed nine points and six rebounds and Cortazzo contributed eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
W&J travels to Chatham on Saturday, Dec. 6 for a 2 p.m. PAC tip-off with the Cougars.
