PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team opened the 2014 Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Championship with an 11-7 loss to NCAA Division I Bucknell.
The loss drops the Presidents under .500 on the year at 12-13. W&J will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. against Monmouth (Ill.).
W&J opened a 1-0 lead halfway through the first quarter when
Mike Magdic found the back of the net. From that point, however, Bucknell used an 8-0 run, including 4-0 in the second period, to open up an 8-1 lead.
The Presidents out-scored the Bison, 6-5, in the second half but were unable to overcome the 6-1 halftime deficit.
Mitch Fountain led W&J with three goals. Magdic added a pair of scores, with
Kevin Dunigan and
Nick Willison each posting a goal.
Chris DeNunzio made nine saves in the defeat.
