WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Five Presidents reached double figures and the team shot better than 50 percent from the field in a 99-67 win over Penn State DuBois.
With the win, the Washington & Jefferson men's basketball team improves to 1-8 on the season with two games remaining in the calendar year. Penn State DuBois drops to 0-9.
The Presidents opened up a 12-2 lead under three minutes into the game after scoring on their first five possessions.
Adam Robison and
Doug Johnson both knocked down triples before the game was one minute old, then
Mitch Locher and
Mike Resnik recorded layups and a jumper by Locher capped the run 2:43 into the game.
Over the next four-plus minutes, the Lions used a 14-5 run to get within one point, 17-16, but a jumper by Resnik ended the rally. Following a PSUDÂ free throw, the Presidents scored 15 of the next 19 points, jump started by a
Jake Swan triple and including four layups, 34-21.
Twice the Presidents worked the first half margin to 15 points and the half ended when Johnson hit from beyond-the-arc as time ran out in the period to send W&J into the locker room leading, 50-37.
With the lead at 13 points, 60-47, 4:30 into the second half, Johnson scored eight of the game's next 10 points thanks to a three-pointer and three made free throws, 70-47. After a PSUD bucket ended the run, a 9-0 spurt with five points by Swan and four from Resnik made the larger dash a 19-2 rally.
The Presidents built the lead to as big as 41 points, 98-57, following a pair of buckets by
Kodie Hanley, including a fastbreak dunk off a steal, to coast to the 99-67 win.
For the game, the red and black shot 52.8 percent (38-of-72) from the field and held a 41-33 advantage in rebounding. The W&J bench out-scored the PSUD bench 38-4 on the night.
Johnson led five Presidents in double figures with 22 points in just 18 minutes. Resnik posted his second double-double of the year with 18 points and 12 boards, including five offensive. Swan finished at 11 points while adding a game-high seven assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Tanner Huffman contributed a career-high 10 points and five boards off the bench.
Nick Martin had six helpers and five rebounds. Hanley had nine points and four boards, and Robison matched his point total with five assists.
W&J returns to the court on Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 29-30 at the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament hosted by St. John Fisher (N.Y.). W&J will open with Utica on Monday at 6 p.m. before taking on the host Cardinals on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
