W&J and Geneva split PAC softball doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Madison Rotto's three hits and three RBI in game one helped Washington & Jefferson defeat Geneva 6-2, but the Golden Tornadoes earned a PAC softball split after outlasting the Presidents 3-1 in nine innings in the nightcap Tuesday night at Brooks Park.

The second game remained scoreless after eight innings and as darkness began to settle in, the Golden Tornadoes (7-8, 1-1) struck for three runs in the top of the ninth.  Emily Watson knocked in Kelsey Cunningham to make it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the ninth, but Samantha Johnson struck out the final batter to preserve the win.

Johnson scattered nine hits and struck out five, while Rotto suffered the loss after surrendering two earned runs on 11 hits (5 K) in 8 1/3 innings.  Cunningham notched a pair of doubles and tied Hannah Schulz for the Presidents' career doubles record with 38.  Rotto and Watson both added two base hits.

In game one, W&J started quickly with three runs in the first.  Watson singled in the first run and Rotto tacked on a two-run double.

Rotto made it a 4-0 game in the third with a solo home run, while Watson doubled home another run in the fourth.  W&J's final run came in the seventh when Abby Cunningham drew a walk and scored on an error.

Krista McCartney (5 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 5 K) and Bethany Shepherd (2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 K) nearly combined on the shutout; however, Geneva scored twice with two outs in the final inning.
