W&J clubs way to softball sweep at PS-Behrend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson banged out 25 hits, including nine doubles, during a Sunday softball sweep at Penn State-Behrend.  The Presidents (16-6) scored four times in the seventh inning in game one to win 6-2 and then defeated the Lions 13-10 in the nightcap.

Abby Cunningham drove in two runs in each game, while her older sister, Kelsey Cunningham, collected four hits and scored five runs.  Kelsey Cunningham now has 176 career base hits which leaves her five away from tying Amanda Howard's W&J record.

W&J trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth inning in game one, but back-to-back doubles by Madison Rotto and Jen Bahm tied the game.  Abby Cunningham's bases-clearing double in the seventh provided the go-ahead runs and Rotto followed with a RBI single.

Emily Watson (6-1) went the distance on the mound for the Presidents after holding the Lions (11-13) to two hits and one earned run.  She struck out three and walked four.  Morgan Figura led the lineup with a 3-for-3 day at the plate (two singles, one double), while Courtney Roperti scored two of the team's six runs.

Penn State-Behrend led 6-1 after two innings in game two, but the Presidents rallied with four runs in the third and six more in the fourth.  Rotto and Breanna Gleason had RBI singles in the third.  Abby Cunningham and Rotto both clubbed RBI doubles in the fourth.

The Lions got back into the game with four runs in the sixth to trail 11-10, but Kelsey Cunningham singled and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh for the first insurance run before Abby Cunningham singled in Sadie Marak with the final run.

Kelsey Cunningham went 3-for-4 and scored four times in game two, while Abby Cunningham, Rotto and Gleason all had two hits and two RBI.  Watson added two hits and scored twice.

Krista McCartney improved to 5-2 in the circle after pitching 5 2/3 innings of relief.  She allowed four runs on five hits and fanned three Lions.

The Presidents, who have won six in a row, travel to Kentucky Wednesday for a 3:30 pm doubleheader with Thomas More.
